The Miracle Tarot
I first saw this Japanese deck on the Folly of the Alchemist web site a couple of years ago. I finally got around to ordering one. This is a 78 card deck. Although the book is in Japanese, the card titles are in the top and bottom borders in English. The art is excellent. The artist draws comic books for girls. The cards are tall and rather slender: 4 13/16" X 2 3/16". The Major Arcana, Court Cards and Aces are detailed and beautifully colored. The Minor Arcana are pips. While the suit symbols are well done, they are small and rendered on a white background that makes the appear rather plain. The suits are Cups, Pentacles, Wands and Swords. The Court consists of King, Queen, Knight and page. The Major Arcana have the traditional names. Strength is VIII and Justice is XI. The backs are gold and black and the cards have a glossy coating
As previously noted, the scenes are highly detailed and beautifully colored. All of the people depicted look like females. Those that are plainly male often have earrings, eye makeup and colored lips. There are a couple of cards that do not seem to fit in with the rest of the deck - the Fool and Temperance. These two cards show round faced, child-like figures on rather plain backgrounds. These cards pay little attention to the traditional Major Arcana scenes and often deviate from them substantially. I would call this an art deck.
The deck comes with a booklet written in Japanese. I am sorry that I can not read it as it contains many different spreads. Two appear to be the Celtic Cross and the Astrological Spread, but many other intriguing layouts are provided. The deck is packaged in two wells cut from foam rubber. The foam rubber is encased in a piece of cardboard that opens like a shutter. This slides into a sleeve that also holds the booklet.
I recommend this deck for collectors. The lack of scenes on the pips, the non-traditional scenes on the Majors and the Japanese booklet make this deck less suited to reading, but the beauty of the images make it a pleasure to behold. The deck costs about $33.00 (depends on the exchange rate). It arrived in less than a week via UPS.
