Il Tarocco di Sandro Pipino

This 78 card deck is basically an Italian art deck. The imagery is loosely based on the work of Pamela Coleman Smith. The art is good and well detailed with intense colors. My only complaint about the art is that some of the people in the Major Arcana (The Magician through the Hierophant), and all of the people in the Minor Arcana lack facial features. Surprisingly, some of the persons depicted in the Majors, who are not primary in the scene do have facial features, even though the main personage does not (see the Magician).

The Majors have traditional names which are written on the top of each card in Italian, and on the bottom of each card in English, Spanish, German and French. The Majors are numbered differently, with the Wheel of Fortune numbered IX and the Hermit numbered X. I think this was a printing error, because the instruction leaflet, though not written in English, lists these two cards in their traditional sequence. Strength is VIII and Justice is XI. The suits are Wands, Cups, Swords and Coins. The court consists of King, Queen, Knight and Page - all faceless. The Minor Arcana are illustrated with scenes. Each Minor Arcana card (two through ten) has the number at the top and a one word interpretation on the bottom of each card. Most of the interpretations are Crowley Thoth or traditional Golden Dawn interpretations, with a few exceptions. Some images are also similar to Pamela Coleman Smith's scenes in composition, if not in style.

The deck is from a numbered, limited edition of 3000 decks by ItalCards, a publisher of limited edition, art decks. It is packaged in a two piece box with a plastic well in the bottom half of the box for the deck. I recommend this deck for collectors. Those familar with the Waite-Smith, or Thoth decks should be able to read with this deck right out of the box.
