This deck is based on the illustrations by Sir John Tenniel for the Wonderland books by Lewis Carroll (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass). The art style is similar to Tenniel's and the cards bear images of the many characters and creatures from the books. The Mad Hatter is the Fool; Lewis Carroll himself is the Magician; Alice is the High Priestess, the Cheshire cat is the Emperor, Tweedledee and Tweedledum are the Lovers,  the Queen of Hearts is Death, and the Jabberwock is the Devil. The Major Arcana have the traditional names. Strength is VIII and Justice is XI. The suits are Peppermills (Wands/Clubs), Hats (Cups/Hearts), Flamingos (Swords/Spades) and Oysters (Disks/Diamonds). The court consists of King, Queen , Knight and Page. The Minor Arcana images are based on illustrations from the book. Despite the Wonderland theme, many of the cards resemble their counterparts in the Rider Waite. The backs have a flower design.

The cards are smaller than average at 3 15/16" X 2 3/8". The artist does a fair job of capturing Sir Tenniel's style, though her work is not as finely detailed. The colors are simple, as they should be, since the original illustrations were not in color. The Minor Arcana also have playing card symbols in the upper left and bottom right borders. Anyone familiar with the story will find this deck well thought out. I would feel comfortable giving this deck to a child who was familiar with the story.

The little booklet that comes with the deck describes each Major Arcana card and provides an upright and reversed meaning. There are no descriptions for the Minor Arcana, just upright and reversed meanings. The Ten Card Spread (Celtic Cross) is described.

I recommend this deck for collectors, and for those who love the Wonderland Story. As previously mentioned, children might find this deck interesting and the smaller size makes it easier for them to handle. I have seen this deck sell for high prices in on-line auctions. As far as I know it is still available for $14.00 from U.S. Games.
